SNMP CONFIGURATION

Me And My Friend Had worked on SNMP In VMware It's working .....
Enabling SNMP access and trap forwarding for VMware
IBM® Director 5.10.3 supports SNMP access and trap forwarding on VMware ESX Server, and will inter-operate with the ucd-snmp versions that ship with VMware ESX Server version 2.5.2 and 3.0.

These instructions apply only to using IBM Director SNMP support on VMware ESX Server.
Complete the following steps to enable SNMP access and trap forwarding for managed systems running VMware:
Download the net-snmp-5.2.1.tar.gz file from the Net-SNMP Web site at www.net-snmp.org/download.html.
Build and install the Net-SNMP libraries using the following steps.
Notes:
This procedure does not perform a full installation of Net-SNMP, but installs only the Net-SNMP libraries, which are required for IBM Director Core Services SNMP functions.
Refer to the INSTALL and README files included in the net-snmp-5.2.1.tar.gz package for additional installation information.
Untar the source files. Type the following command and press Enter.
tar -xvzf net-snmp-5.2.1.tar.gzChange to the source directory. Type the following command and press Enter.
cd net-snmp-5.2.1Build the Net-SNMP libraries with default options. Type the following commands (press Enter after each).
./configure --with-defaults
makeInstall the Net-SNMP libraries only to /usr/local/lib. Type the following command and press Enter.
make installlibsTo enable trap forwarding, edit the /etc/init.d/dacimlist file and uncomment the following two lines two lines in the SNMP End Consumer section.
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATHNote: The configuration changes will not take effect until you restart the cimlistener daemon in step 7.
To enable SNMP access, edit the /etc/init.d/dasnmp file and uncomment the following two lines in the section regarding the location of the net-snmp libraries.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib

export LD_LIBRARY_PATHConfigure the SNMP daemon that ships with VMware to support AgentX agents. For details, see the VMware documentation at www.vmware.com/support/pubs/esx_pubs.html.

Create the file /usr/local/share/snmp/snmpd.conf to specify trapsink and trapcommunity settings. You might have to create the directory. This file should contain only settings for trapcommunity and trapsink.
Specify a trap community value by adding a line containing the word trapcommunity followed by a space and the trapcommunity value, as in the following example.
trapcommunity publicSpecify a trapsink value for each destination to which IBM Director will send SNMP traps. Add a line containing the word trapsink followed by a space and the trapsink value, as in the following example.
trapsink 192.168.1.1Restart the cimlistener daemon by typing the following commands and pressing Enter after each:
/etc/init.d/dacimlist stop
/etc/init.d/dacimlist startRestart the IBM Director AgentX subagent by typing the following commands and pressing Enter after each:
/etc/init.d/dasnmp stop
/etc/init.d/dasnmp start

Installing NETWORK FILE Server

(Note: NFS Server works on Windows 2003 R2 with Service pack 2 & Windows 2008  )
1. On the Windows 2003 Server make sure “Microsoft Services for NFS” in installed. If not you need to add it under Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components, Other Network File and Print Services
2. Next go to folder you want to share and right-click on it and select Properties
3. Click on the NFS Sharing tab and select “Share this Folder”
4. Enter a Share Name, check “Anonymous Access” and make sure the UID and GID are both .
5. In Virtual Center, select your ESX server and click the “Configuration” tab and then select “Storage”
6. Click on “Add Storage” and select “Network File System” as the storage type
7. Enter the Windows Server name, the folder (share) name and a descriptive Data store Name
8. Once it finishes the configuration you can now map your VM’s CD-ROM devices to this new VMFS volume
Note: It is assumed that you have already installed Active Directory and DNS with the correct configuration.
Open the Control Panel and then start the Add/Remove Programs utility. After it has started select from the left panel “Add/Remove Windows Components.”
This will open a new panel. A list of components will be presented. Those components that already have a checkmark in the box at their left are already installed. Scroll down until you find the entry for ‘Other Network File and Print Services.’ (Why NFS is lumped in with Print Services is unknown, but this arrangement does change with the next Server release.)

Now select the Details button. A new window will open titled “Other Network File and Print Services.”

From this Window choose “Microsoft Services for NFS” and choose Details again. Yet another window will open, showing all of the available components related to NFS, titled ‘Microsoft Services for NFS.’

In the ‘Microsoft Services for NFS’ window you will select all of the components that you need to support your local configuration. You should check all of the available selection boxes in a typical situation because all of these components will be needed. If you are not going to use UNM because all of your client machines are now Windows Vista then you won’t need to select User Name Mapping. Once all of the choices are made, click on OK (several times) to begin the installation/activation.

FAILOVER CLUSTER

Installing a Windows Server 2008 Failover  Cluster

I recently needed to do some testing with a Windows 2008 cluster for OpsMgr so I decided to go ahead and embrace Windows 2008 as both a host and guest operating system.
Server 2008 with Hyper-V ....

To do this I upgraded my Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, and added the role for Hyper-V. First off, Hyper-V is really cool. Attaching a Video of what my environment looked like once I had configured .

I followed this video ,Look into this !!!!!

Updates Error In windows Operating System

I understand the inconvenience you encountered when trying to perform Windows Update. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

The issue may be caused by one of the following factors:
1. The installation is affected by some third-party security software.
2. The downloaded installation file is corrupted.

In order to narrow down the cause of our issue, let's refer to the following steps:

NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please be sure to enable them again when the update process has been completed.

Step 1: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
================================================
This issue may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.
1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.
If the steps above do not work, let's refer to the following steps to manually download and install the update.
Step 2: Download and install the update manually.
======================================
1. Please download the update from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=c0145563-428e-47b6-b245-b59dce88ac0e
Please note its location.
2. Please double-click the downloaded file to install the update.
If an error is encountered when installing the update manually, please capture a screenshot for further research
How to capture a screenshot
======================
1. Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click the "Start" Button, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter.
3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste". Then click the "File" menu, and click "Save".
4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot".
5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click "Desktop" on the left pane and then click "Save".
In the meantime, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.

How to collect the WindowsUpdate.log file
================================
1. Click the "Start" Button, type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without the quotes) in the Search Bar and Press Enter. We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
2. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As".

Ports and Protocols of systems

The Windows server system includes a comprehensive and integrated infrastructure that is designed to meet the requirements of developers and of information technology (IT) professionals. This system is designed to run programs and solutions that information workers can use to obtain, to analyze, and to share information quickly and easily. These Microsoft client, server and server program products use a variety of network ports and protocols to communicate with client systems and with other server systems over the network. Dedicated firewalls, host-based firewalls, and Internet Protocol security (IPsec) filters are other important components that are required to help secure your network. However, if these technologies are configured to block ports and protocols that are used by a specific server, that server will no longer respond to client requests.

Ports and Protocols
The following table summarizes the information from the "
System Services Ports" section of this article. This table is sorted by port number instead of by the service name.

System Update Error in windows 7

What does the System Update Readiness Tool do?
The System Update Readiness Tool verifies the integrity of the following resources:

Files that are located under the following directories:

%SYSTEMROOT%\Servicing\Packages %SYSTEMROOT%\WinSxS\Manifests

Registry data that is located under the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Components

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Schema

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
Note This list may be updated at any time.

When the System Update Readiness Tool detects incorrect manifests, files, or registry data, it might replace the incorrect data with a corrected version.

What Windows Update installation errors can the System Update Readiness Tool potentially address?

The following table lists error messages that you might receive when you try to install a software update. These errors might be caused by a system irregularity that the System Update Readiness Tool might be able to resolve. However, the tool might be unable to fix all instances in which these errors occur. Collapse this tableExpand this table

HOW TO CHECK UPDATES ON WINDOWS BOX

This is a general question for administrators and windows users. We have two ways to test it. One is through GUI and another is through command prompt.

Figure.1

If your windows installed in full installation mode, then you can directly go to Start –> Windows Update –> View Update History. In that window you can check all the list of updates installed in your machine.
If your windows installed in core installation then open command prompt –> type the below command in it and hit enter.

wmic qfe list

Now, in the list it will shows all the list of updates installed in the server. Tested in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Thanks

Troubleshooting Server/Client Side error's for wsus server 2003/2008

WSUS SERVER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1823898/WSUS30SP2StepbyStep.pdf

When i check the log under c:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log i get the following error "Error 0x80072efd occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls"

Solution to this is as follows

go to RUN and type "gpedit.msc" on the client PC and check if server name/IP is correct or not.

If you have installed a new Anti-virus/Firewall, check if it has blocked any ports (which may have blocked the updates)

Clear the BITS queue

Click on start -> run

Type "services.msc"

Select "Background Intelligent transfer service", then restart this service. (stop and start resolved my problem)

Run the ClientDiag tool. you can download it from CLIENT TOOL

Cool
Have a Good Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How to send Updates from Server to client using Windows server updated Services

Your computers do not need to join a domain to take advantage of WSUS server. You can leave your computers in a workgroup and still add them to any computer groups you want. For various reasons some small organizations may have a group of computers that they would rather not join the domain. However, they may prefer to update all the patches on these computers by using the WSUS server.

Computer groups are created in WSUS to manage computers and deploy patches in a more controlled fashion. However, to add computers to your computer groups you need to configure either Group Policy (for computers in the domain) or Local Computer Policy (for computers in a workgroup). In your case, you have computers that are part of a workgroup. So, you should follow this procedure:
1.Go to your Windows XP client and start a new Microsoft Management Console (MMC). At Start, Run, type MMC.
2.Use Ctrl+M to add a new snap-in.
3.Click Add, and then add the Group Policy Object Editor for the Local Computer.
4.Click Close, and then click OK.
5.Expand the Local Computer Policy.
6.Under Computer Configuration, go to Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update. The result is shown in Figure 1.
7.In the right-hand pane, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location. Note:You can also configure the option Automatic Updates detection frequency if you want. The default is 22 hours.
8.Configure the settings as shown in Figure 2. Replace MARS with the name of your WSUS server.
9.Click OK and then close the MMC without saving it.

Figure 1. Configuring local policy for Windows Update

Within about 20 minutes, your computer should show up in WSUS server under Unassigned Computers category. If you don’t want to wait 20 minutes, execute the following command on your Windows XP client at the command prompt:

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

Your computer will show up in WSUS right away. To move it to a different Computer Group, click "Move the selected computer under Tasks" in the upper left corner
