Run Hardware Diagnostic tests

Most servers are shipped with a hardware diagnostics CD, although other hardware vendors may choose to install a hidden utility partition located on your hard drive.
Note: If you are not experienced with computers or have any concerns, please contact your hardware vendor.
You can diagnose hardware related problems on your server by booting from the diagnostic CD or choosing Diagnostics from the boot device list.
These diagnostic tools allow you to:
  • Check the hardware configuration and verify that it is functioning correctly.
  • Test individual hardware components.
  • Diagnose hardware-related problems.
  • Obtain a complete hardware configuration.
When testing, if a component failure is detected, make note of any error code(s) and contact the hardware vendor.

Check your memory

Note: This process requires downtime on your ESX/ESXi host for up to 48 hours. In most cases, contacting your hardware vendor for a diagnostic utility as mentioned above should be sufficient in testing your hardware. VMware does not endorse or recommend any particular third party utility.  However, there are third party options available to test your memory.
To test your memory:
  1. Download memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/.
  2. Extract the ISO image from the .gz or .zip archive.
  3. Burn the image to CD.
  4. Boot your ESX/ESXi host from the CD.
  5. The memtest goes through each memory bank and checks for errors.

    Note: If memtest86+ does not run on your hardware, contact your vendor for their memory test utility. 
Ensure your server conforms to Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) rules and regulations
Notes:
  • If you are not experienced with computers or have any concerns, please contact your hardware vendor.
  • Problems related to NUMA usually occur following a RAM upgrade or after an ESX/ESXi Server host installation.
You might see an error such as the following:

The BIOS reports that NUMA node 1 has no memory. This problem is either caused by a bad BIOS or a very unbalanced distribution of memory modules. 
NUMA is a system where each processor has separate memory. The separate memory helps to avoid a performance hit when several processors attempt to address the same memory.
The main requirement is that a similar amount of memory is installed beside each processor. If the amount of memory installed beside each processor is not not similar, it is unbalanced and you might experience performance problems.For more information, see ESX Server Memory Management on Systems with AMD Opteron Processors (1570).

Run the VMware CPU Identification Utility

To ensure that your CPU(s) are being detected as expected you can use the VMware CPU Identification Utility. You can download the utility at VMware Shared Utilities. This tool helps you ensure that the ESX host is detecting and reporting your CPU(s) correctly.
When the the VMware CPU Identification Utility has been downloaded, the cpuid.iso image can be used to create a bootable CD that aids in processor and feature identification. The tool displays Family/Model/Stepping information for the CPUs detected, and hexadecimal values for the CPU registers that identify specific CPU features. The hexadecimal register values are then interpreted to indicate whether the CPUs support features like, 64bit, SSE3, and nX/xD.

Basics Trouble shooting on VMware ESX/ESXi

1) What is management service service used for ESX/ESXi Server?
2) What is Watchdog ?
3) What is Host Agent ?

I am not able to create the VM's in  running ESX / ESXi Server, But i have some VM in ESX Server which is Running with out Any issue .

How to Solve this issue ?

Esxcfg-nics

-s Set the speed of this NIC to one of 10/100/1000/10000. Requires a NIC parameter.

-d Set the duplex of this NIC to one of 'full' or 'half'. Requires a NIC parameter.

-a Set speed and duplex automatically. Requires a NIC parameter.

-l Print the list of NICs and their settings.

-r Restore the NICs configured speed/duplex settings. (Internal use only)

-h Displays command help



esxcfg-nics examples:

Set the speed and duplex of a NIC (vmnic2) to 100/Full:

esxcfg-nics -s 100 -d full vmnic2

Set the speed and duplex of a NIC (vmnic2) to auto-negotiate:

esxcfg-vswitch

Description: Creates and updates virtual machine (vswitch) network settings

Syntax: esxcfg-vswitch [vswitch[:ports]]

Options:

-a Add a new virtual switch.

-d Delete the virtual switch.

-l List all the virtual switches.

-L Set pnic as an uplink for the vswitch.

-U Remove pnic from the uplinks for the vswitch.

-p Specify a portgroup for operation. Use ALL for operation to work on all portgroups

-v Set VLAN ID for portgroup specified by -p. 0 would disable the VLAN.

-c Check to see if a virtual switch exists. Program outputs a 1 if it exists, 0 otherwise.

-A Add a new portgroup to the virtual switch.

-D Delete the portgroup from the virtual switch.

-C Check to see if a portgroup exists. Program outputs a 1 if it exists, 0 otherwise.

-r Restore all virtual switches from the configuration file (Internal use only)

-h Displays command help

esxcfg-vswitch examples:

Add a pnic (vmnic2) to a vswitch (vswitch1):

esxcfg-vswitch -L vmnic2 vswitch1

Remove a pnic (vmnic3) from a vswitch (vswitch0):

esxcfg-vswitch -U vmnic3 vswitch0

Create a portgroup (VM Network3) on a vswitch (vswitch1):

esxcfg-vswitch -A "VM Network 3" vSwitch1

Assign a VLAN ID (3) to a portgroup (VM Network 3) on a vswitch (vswitch1):

Esxcfg-vswif

Description: Creates and updates service console network settings. This command is used if you cannot manage the ESX Server host through the VI Client because of network configuration issues.

Syntax: esxcfg-vswif [vswif]



Options:

-a Add vswif, requires IP parameters. Automatically enables interface.

-d Delete vswif.

-l List configured vswifs.

-e Enable this vswif interface.

-s Disable this vswif interface.

-p Set the portgroup name of the vswif.

-i or DHCP The IP address for this vswif or specify DHCP to use DHCP for this address.

-n The IP netmask for this vswif.

-b The IP broadcast address for this vswif. (not required if netmask and ip are set)

-c Check to see if a virtual NIC exists. Program outputs a 1 if the given vswif exists, 0 otherwise.

-D Disable all vswif interfaces. (WARNING: This may result in a loss of network connectivity to the Service Console)

-E Enable all vswif interfaces and bring them up.

-r Restore all vswifs from the configuration file. (Internal use only)

-h Displays command help.



Note: You can set the Service Console default gateway by editing the /etc/sysconfig/network file or through the VI Client under Configuration, DNS & Routing.



esxcfg-vswif examples:

Change your Service Console (vswif0) IP and Subnet Mask:

esxcfg-vswif -i 172.20.20.5 -n 255.255.255.0 vswif0

Add a Service Console (vswif0):

esxcfg-vswif -a vswif0 -p "Service Console" -i 172.20.20.40 -n 255.255.255.0

Esxcfg-route

Description: Sets or retrieves the default VMkernel gateway route

Syntax: esxcfg-route [ [] ]

can be specified in 2 ways: as a single argument in / format or as a pair.

is either an IP address or 'default'



Options: -a Add route to the VMkernel, requires network address (or 'default') and gateway IP address.

-d Delete route from the VMkernel, requires network address (or 'default').

-l List configured routes for the Service Console.

-r Restore route setting to configured values on system start. (Internal use only)

-h Displays command help

esxcfg-route examples:

Set the VMkernel default gateway route:

esxcfg-route 172.20.20.1

Add a route to the VMkernel:

esxcfg-route -a default 255.255.255.0 172.20.20.1

Esxcfg-vmknic

Description: Creates and updates VMkernel TCP/IP settings for VMotion, NAS, and iSCSI

Syntax: esxcfg-vmknic [[portgroup]]

Options:

-a Add a VMkernel NIC to the system, requires IP parameters and portgroup name.

-d Delete VMkernel NIC on given portgroup.

-e Enable the given NIC if disabled.

-D Disable the given NIC if enabled.

-l List VMkernel NICs.

-i The IP address for this VMkernel NIC. Setting an IP address requires that the -n option be given in same command.

-n The IP netmask for this VMkernel NIC. Setting the IP netmask requires that the -i option be given in the same command.

-r Restore VMkernel TCP/IP interfaces from configuration file. (Internal use only)

-h Displays command help

Installing NETWORK FILE Server

(Note: NFS Server works on Windows 2003 R2 with Service pack 2 & Windows 2008  )
1. On the Windows 2003 Server make sure “Microsoft Services for NFS” in installed. If not you need to add it under Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components, Other Network File and Print Services
2. Next go to folder you want to share and right-click on it and select Properties
3. Click on the NFS Sharing tab and select “Share this Folder”
4. Enter a Share Name, check “Anonymous Access” and make sure the UID and GID are both .
5. In Virtual Center, select your ESX server and click the “Configuration” tab and then select “Storage”
6. Click on “Add Storage” and select “Network File System” as the storage type
7. Enter the Windows Server name, the folder (share) name and a descriptive Data store Name
8. Once it finishes the configuration you can now map your VM’s CD-ROM devices to this new VMFS volume
Note: It is assumed that you have already installed Active Directory and DNS with the correct configuration.
Open the Control Panel and then start the Add/Remove Programs utility. After it has started select from the left panel “Add/Remove Windows Components.”
This will open a new panel. A list of components will be presented. Those components that already have a checkmark in the box at their left are already installed. Scroll down until you find the entry for ‘Other Network File and Print Services.’ (Why NFS is lumped in with Print Services is unknown, but this arrangement does change with the next Server release.)



Now select the Details button. A new window will open titled “Other Network File and Print Services.”

From this Window choose “Microsoft Services for NFS” and choose Details again. Yet another window will open, showing all of the available components related to NFS, titled ‘Microsoft Services for NFS.’

In the ‘Microsoft Services for NFS’ window you will select all of the components that you need to support your local configuration. You should check all of the available selection boxes in a typical situation because all of these components will be needed. If you are not going to use UNM because all of your client machines are now Windows Vista then you won’t need to select User Name Mapping. Once all of the choices are made, click on OK (several times) to begin the installation/activation.

window7 Updates



Windows updates may fail in Windows 7 or in Vista with the Error Code 0×80070422 with the following error in the c:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log file.

80070422 SelfUpdate Failure Software Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0×80070422

This can happen for two reasons,

•“Windows Update” Service is disabled or not set to Automatic as Startup Type

•“Windows Modules Installer” Service is not set to manual as Startup type.

To resolve this Windows Vista or Windows 7 update issue, set the Startup type of respective services to “Automatic” & “Manual” respectively.
Follow the steps to resolve Windows Update error 80070422:

                        Important:You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
•Press Start, type admin in the start menu search box, and click on Administrative Tools
•Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation
•Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Properties
•On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected
•Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, click Start. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
•Similarly, set the “Windows Modules Installer” service startup type as “manual”.
Note:First you want to reveal the hidden admin account in Windows Vista and login to the hidden admin account.For this do the following:
•Click on Windows Vista Start orbs.
•In start menu search type: cmd
•Right-Click the cmd icon and choose “Run as Administrator”
•Now type the follwoing command:
net user administrator /active:yes
You should see a message that the command completed successfully, logoff and login to the true admin account

Updates Error In windows Operating System



I understand the inconvenience you encountered when trying to perform Windows Update. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.


The issue may be caused by one of the following factors:
1. The installation is affected by some third-party security software.
2. The downloaded installation file is corrupted.


In order to narrow down the cause of our issue, let's refer to the following steps:

NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please be sure to enable them again when the update process has been completed.


Step 1: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
================================================
This issue may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.
1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.
If the steps above do not work, let's refer to the following steps to manually download and install the update.
Step 2: Download and install the update manually.

1. Please download the update from

2. Please double-click the downloaded file to install the update.
If an error is encountered when installing the update manually, please capture a screenshot for further research
How to capture a screenshot

1. Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click the "Start" Button, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter.
3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste". Then click the "File" menu, and click "Save".
4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot".
5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click "Desktop" on the left pane and then click "Save".
In the meantime, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.


How to collect the WindowsUpdate.log file

1. Click the "Start" Button, type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without the quotes) in the Search Bar and Press Enter. We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
2. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As".

3. From the left panel, click "Desktop" and click the Save button.

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK ERROR "cannot start microsoft outlook cannot open the outlook window 2010"

Hey many of you got this problem ,There is a small procedure below for solving this issue

The way to fix this is to do a system restore.
